Agnes Banks - Blue Route


Overview

Flat terrain some major road crossings. Quite back roads dominated by small farm holdings. Feature is the stop at UWS, with many historic buildings. Approx 38km.

Suggested Regroup Points
  • Just before the round about on George St,
  • Just over the brow of the hill in Parker Rd at the junction of Carrington Rd and Bennett Rd
  • Just after the right hand turn of Carrington Rd into Milford Rd.
  • After the right hand turn from the Driftway onto Castlereagh Rd
  • The Stables, UWS
  • Windsor if you decide to head straight back or if you have taken the lowlands route regroup at Cornwallis Rd and Cornwell Lane

Ride Detail

Starting at the park head down to George St and across the lights under the railway line taking the laneway just after the bridge. Turn right into Argyle St, straight across at the light, turning right again at the Speedo factory (Mileham St.). At the end turn right into Range Rd and then right again at the round about and follow back to George St, caution cars and trucks and more cars. Proceed through the round about by moving into the right hand turn lane. After the round about your now heading towards Richmond but please tun left into Bennett St. If you've gone across the bridge turn around and back to Bennett St.

At the odd T intersection take the straight-ahead option down Parker Rd. At the end and just before you get to The Northern Rd turn left down Leitch Ave. Right then left and then right again should see you in Milford Rd. If you miss this turn you will find the township of Londonderry.

Following Milford Rd turn left into Macpherson Rd and follow this road around to turn left again into Reynolds Rd. Watch the traffic on Londonderry Rd as you need to do a quick left followed by a right at the Richmond Race Course into Wilshire Rd. If you follow Wilshire through to the end you will get to Castlereagh Rd. The ride route turns right down Jockbet St heading towards the Driftway.

At the Driftway you can turn right and head back to Windsor or turn left and proceed through to Castlereagh Rd. Turn right onto Castlereagh Rd taking care to watch for traffic when turning. Keeping to the left proceed at the next left up Drift Rd. Turning left will take you down the hill and the start of the roads around the Lowlands. Turning right will take you back across Castlereagh Rd into Southee Rd. Follow Southee across Londonderry Rd and do the dog leg turn into the UWS grounds. Proceed down this road and turn left into Smithy's Place into the Stables Square for a well-earned break and toilet stop. Please respect the rights of the students who may be on campus.

Proceed around the oval turning left into Science Rd and then right into College Drive, which is the main gate entrance to UWS. Proceed straight ahead across Blacktown rd across the railway line. At the lights if you turn left you will find the main shopping strip for Richmond. Turning right will take you directly to Windsor on the main road. There is an off road cycleway on the railway line side or an on road cycle lane.

Proceeding straight ahead down Pitt Rd will take you around the back of the Richmond RAAF base. Proceeding straight takes you back onto Windsor Rd and back into Windsor. The route around past the airport also has an alternate route by turn left down Bensons Lane into Cornwell Lane and then right into Cornwallis Rd back into Windsor.

Tizzana Winery- Green Route

Overview

Flat sections, major road crossings, some hill climbs and steep down hill, gravel roads, causeway water crossing. Good scenery along Bull Ridge Rd. Feature is historic Tizzana Winery. Ensure 2 full water bottles, limited points to top up bottles. Approx distance 48km.

Ride Detail

Follow The Terrace across to Windsor Rd; turn left across the Hawkesbury River Bridge, caution narrow bridge, high-density traffic. Turn left at top of rise onto Freemans Reach Rd. Caution narrow shoulder with fast moving traffic till you reach Gorricks Lane. Continue going straight ahead turning right along Hiberts Lane, steep climb up to township of Freemans Reach. Turn right onto Kurmond Rd and left at the bottom of the hill into Creek Ridge Rd. Follow this road till the five ways junction of Creek Ridge Rd, Spinks Rd, Boundary Rd and Old East Kurrajong Rd.

Turn left into Old East Kurrajong Rd, this is the first section of gravel, caution on the causeway creek crossing for potholes and fast flowing water. After crossing the road climbs steeply up to Bull Ridge Rd where we turn right to regroup at the hall. Follow Bull Ridge Rd onto the Putty Rd, riding approx 1km to turn right again onto the continuation of Bull Ridge Rd.

After the steep decent, caution at the intersection. Turn left, Portland Rd to do the two ferries ride or right up the hill. Steep down hill and turn left onto Sackville Rd and then right again on Tizzana Rd, which is gravel. Watch for traffic coming of ferry, as they are not looking for cyclist crossing to Tizzana Rd. Follow this road around to the start of the bitumen and the historic Tizzana Winery, the first winery in NSW. Enjoy a break here, bush toilets up the hill.

The ride continues to follow the main road back toward Windsor, passing the turn on your left to the historic Ebenezer Church. Turning left back onto Sackville Rd continue heading towards the township of Wilberforce.

At Wilberforce you can turn left along Wilberforce Rd and use the on road cycle lane however caution crossing Buttsworth Creek as there is no shoulder on the bridge and traffic is moving at 80kph. Alternative route is to cross Wilberforce Rd, left into Earl St and follow this road, which continues onto Argyle Reach Rd. This road ends when it joins Freemans Reach Rd.

Scheyville National Park - Green Route

Overview

Quite rural roads, some major road crossings, flat to undulating small hills, cycleway along Windsor Road, Feature is historic Scheyville National Park, the site of a former migrant hostel / army training base. Approx 35km.

Ride detail

Cycleway along Macquarie Street over bridge and continue along off road cycleway beside Windsor Road. At end of cycleway turn right into Level Crossing Road and left again into Wallace Road, followed by another left onto Bandon Road for a crossing of Windsor Road. Caution crossing has no lights. At the T-junction proceed straight across into Bocks Road.

Turn right at the Oakville Bush Fire Brigade followed by a quick left into Old Pitt Town Road. Follow this road until you see the entrance into Scheyville Nat Park, ride up the access road past the building, which used to house, migrates from many countries and later used as an army base during WW11.

The access road leads back onto Scheyville Road, however gate is not always open. Alternatively back track to Old Pitt Town Road turn right follow this road looking for a right hand turn into Airstrip Road. At the T intersection with Pitt Town Dural Road turn left. Using caution to cross Cattai Road you need to go diagonally across to enter Mitchell Road and the turn right out of Bottles Lane to Bathurst Street.

Turning left will take you back into the village of Pitt Town. From Bathurst Street turn left onto Pitt Town Bottoms Road. This area is similar to the lowlands on the western side of Windsor. Pitt Town Bottoms Road intersects with Pitt Town Road, head straight across into Saunders Road and then take the first right into Old Sock Route Road, right again at the intersection with Wolseley Road. Suggest route is to turn left into Havelock Street, right into Old Hawkesbury Road and then left on Pitt Town Road. Caution when entering. Riders also need to merge across the left hand turn lane at the intersection with Windsor Road. After waiting for the change in lights turn right back onto the cycleway to Windsor.

Kurmond and Kurrajong Delights - Red Route

Overview


Some good hill climbs off set by excellent scenery from many parts of this ride over the Hawkesbury Valley. Good down hills on either route if coming from Kurmond. Highlight is township of Kurrajong. Many alternative route options available at various points of this ride. Approx 40km dependent on route options.

Ride Detail

From Kurmond Rd there are two options. Turn left down Terrace Road (BLUE DASH) and stop at the Terrace Park, which has a lookout over the Nepean River and the lowlands. This ride option continues along Terrace Rad following the line of the Nepean River dropping down a steep incline into North Richmond. Caution is required crossing the river heading towards Richmond. A safe off road cycleway path option is available on the southern side of the bridge.

The second option from the intersection of Kurmond Rd and Terrace Lane is to continue along Kurmond Rd. There are various alternatives by taking some of the left hand turns which lead back to North Richmond. Caution some steep descents on these side roads with narrow shoulders. Turning right at Sloops Rd (Red Dash) takes you to Comleroy Road. Caution steep climb up to 'The Slopes'. Left on Comleroy Rd and you head towards Bells Line of Road, right and right again at East Kurrajong Road (good views back over Hawkesbury just before East Kurrajong Road)you will arrive at East Kurrajong Hall. Return to Windsor via reverse of the Tizzana Ride.

If your ride has taken the Kurmond Rd, from Bells Line of Road there are two options down the hill directly into North Richmond via on road shoulder or via the off road cycleway. Caution steep descent. Turning right will take you up to the intersection of Bells Line of Road & Old Bells Line of Rd. This left hand turn will take you across to the village of Kurrajong. Coffee shop available if required. After passing through Kurrajong the road changes to Grose Vale Rd, follow this road back to North Richmond; don't forget to enjoy the views as you descend.

From North Richmond use caution to cross the bridge via the cycleway or 'take the lane' on road. After crossing the bridge riders can precede left into Old Kurrajong Ridges road, which then continues, via Triangle Lane, Powells Lane, Edmonds Rd to Cornwallis Rd and into Windsor. Alternative turning right after the bridge crossing down Old Kurrajong Lane and left into Inalls Lane and then crossing Castlereagh Rd into Southie Rd will take in the UWS Campus and The Stables. Follow the Agnes Banks Ride to return to Windsor.

Maraylya Wonder- Orange Route


Overview

Quite rural roads, some major road crossings, primarily flat to undulating small hills, cycleway along Windsor Road, alternative route which includes gravel roads steep descent, causeway creek crossing, steep climb followed by another steep downhill into Maraylya, not recommend for skinny tyres. Can be incorporated as an extension to the Scheyville National Park ride. Approx 45km.

Ride Detail

As per Scheyville Nat Park Ride turning right at Midson Road, Scheyville Natioanl Park boundary on left hand side of road, take second right and then straight across into Maguires Road, turning right at the T junction. McClymonts Road is approx 500m after turning right. This road has a steep descent into the creek and then a gravel road with a steep climb back upto Pitt Town Road. A further steep descent down Pitt Town Road. Alternative to Mclymonts Road is to continue straight ahead on Maguires Road and then turn left onto Pitt Town Road.

From Maraylya Service Centre follow Boundary Road turning right at the Maraylya Park into Dunns Road. This road intersects with Scheyville Road which is followed through the national Park until reaching Old Stock Route Road.

Rouse Hill Regional Park- Pink Route


Overview

Quite rural roads, some major road crossings, flat to undulating small hills, cycleway along Windsor Road, Feature is historic Rouse Hill Regional Park. Approx 40km.

Ride Details


Vineyard, Blocks Rd, Old Pitt Town Road Rd, right into Terry Road just after the Bush Fire Brigade Station, right again into Hynds (3rd on right) Edwards Road, left onto Annangrove Road, right at Withers Road left along Windsor Road using cycle lane

right hand turn from Windsor Road into Rouse Road, right again just after the low level creek crossing and right again at the school into Worchester Road. At top of small hill is Rouse Hill Regional Park picnic grounds. Leaving the park exit right and left into Guntawong Road which runs into Clarke. Part way along Clarke turn left into Riverstone Road right into McCulloch St cross Garfield Road East into Hamilton Road.

At the end of Hamilton Road left and then right onto Riverstone Parade, past Vineyard Railway Station left into Wallace Road, right at the end into Level crossing Road, off road cycleway following Windsor Road

Two Ferries

Overview

Suitable for rides with a reasonable level of fitness. An extension of the Tizzana Winery ride, a number of steep climbs and descents, two vehicular ferry crossings, excellent elevated scenery over the Hawkesbury River. Water is not readily available. Approx distance 70km.

Ride Detail

Follow the Tizzana Winery Ride, turning left onto Portland Road, a steep descent followed by a steeper hill climb. Road then flows the ridge line until a gradual descent brings you back down to the Hawkesbury River. Turn right before bridge crossing for the Portland Ferry.

After disembarking from the ferry turn right onto River Road. Great scenery along the river until a gradual and long climb up to the junction of Sackville Ferry Road. Turn right back down the hill again enjoying the river scenery and cross on the Sackville Ferry to rejoin into the Tizzana Winery Ride

East Kurrajong - Red Dash

Overview

Follows most of the Kurrajong Delights ride (Red Route). Good hill climb on Sloops Road up to Comleroy Road. Excellent views back over Glossodia and Windsor in the distance. Approx 50km

Ride Detail

Follow The Terrace across to Windsor Rd; turn left across the Hawkesbury River Bridge, caution narrow bridge, high-density traffic. Turn left at top of rise onto Freemans Reach Rd. Turn left onto Kurmond Rd. Follow this road veering right at the round about .

Turning left at first junction of Sloops Rd takes you down hill and into North Richmond, turn right to follow Sloops Road up two steep climbs to Comleroy Road. Left on Comleroy Rd and you head towards Bells Line of Road, right and right again at East Kurrajong Road, there are good views back over Hawkesbury just before East Kurrajong Road. The ride along East Kurrajong is relatively flat with some long steady down hill sections you will arrive at East Kurrajong Hall.
Turn right just before the hall onto Old East Kurrajong Road, this road is gravel. Caution crossing the causeway at the bottom of the hill. At the T junction with Creek Ridge Road turn right then left again. At Freemans Reach tun right up the hill and then left at the primary school, Hibbards Lane caution down the hill and return to Windsor via reverse of the ride start.

Hidden Valley - Purple Dash

Overview

Suitable to riders with a reasonable level of fitness, steep descent followed by a steep ascent, gradual descent back down to river level, quite rural roads with a number of scenic views back over the western areas of Sydney and westward to the lower mountains. Approx 50km

Ride Detail

Follow the standard route out of Windsor cross the bridge and head for Mcgraths Hill / Pitt Town , turn left on to Old Stock Route Road, veer left and onto Scheyville Road. Follow this road straight onto Cattai Ridge Road, steep descent into Currat Creek followed by an even steeper ascent to Halcrows Road. Turn left at Halcrows Road and follow the ridgeline with many places for great scenic sights over the lower Blue Mountains. Some good steady downhills turning left at Cattai Road, caution main road and some traffic.

Just before reaching Pitt Town turn left onto Old Pitt Town Road, right onto Old Stock Route and follow the route back to Windsor for a well earned coffee at Woodies.
